In the spring of 2006, the Cambridge Main Street program asked the R/UDAT program to perform an assessment of how the Cambridge Main Street program could advance its mission for commercial revitalization and economic enhancement of the city's distinctive and historic core.
R/UDAT stands for Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team and is comprised of multi-disciplinary team of professionals usually from the fields of urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, planning and economic development.
The R/UDAT program has used this grassroots approach across the nation to help create communities that are healthy, safe and livable, as well as more sustainable.
Since the report many initiatives have come to fruition including creating the city's new Department of Economic Development, the creation of a free wireless hot spot in 3 blocks of downtown by BCC IT, and the implementation of a downtown Farmer's Market.
