Commissioner Rideout was elected First Ward Commissioner in 2016. He previously served as a member of the Cambridge Ethics Commission and, along with Charles McFadden, wrote the current Ethics Code that the City adopted in 2011.
Currently Commissioner Rideout serves as Secretary and board member of Cambridge Community Radio. He is and has been an active volunteer in the community and nationally previously serving on the Superintendent's Advisory Board for the Dorchester County Public Schools, President and Board Member of Foster Care Alumni of America and Board Member of the Ivakota Foundation, Inc. and the Advisory Board for ACT for Alexandria. In 2004 he received the Alexandria Living Legend Award for his judicial leadership and in 2014 he received the Hometown Hero award for volunteerism in Cambridge.
Commissioner Rideout previously practiced law in Alexandria, VA and was Chief Judge of the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (1989-2004) where he led and participated in a number of initiatives to improve the lives of children and families in his community and nationally. He has received a number of local, state, and national recognitions including the 2004 National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Judge of the Year and the 2012-13 Maryland Comptroller's Golden Apple Award for volunteering in the Dorchester County Public Schools.
He received his BA and Law Degrees from Washington and Lee University and was Law Clerk to the Honorable George L. Hart, Jr. of the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. (1968-69)
He is a member of Old Trinity Church and in 2006 received the Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award for Lay Ministry from the Virginia Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Bobbie, have two grown children, three grandchildren, and a Golden Retriever.
Commissioner Rideout serves on the following Committees: Ordinance Committee. Economic Development Steering Committee, Volunteerism Committee, Historic Preservation Committee Liaison, Long Wharf Committee Liaison, and the County/City Committee for Maintained Health Services in Dorchester County.
