1. Introduction
Cornish Park, located in the historic, African American, neighborhood of Pine Street District. The project includes the refurbishing existing basketball courts, expanding an existing pavilion, update playscape, creating a perimeter exercise walking path, installing new decorative fencing, security cameras and lighting etc.
The restoration of Cornish Park is part of the on-going revitalization plans in this
Pine Street community. The City, with support and funding from the State of Maryland (DHCD and DNR) has been engaged in a long-range plan to revive this neighborhood. This plan includes the rehabbing historic homes, new construction for homeownership, blight removal and improved amenities etc.
Additionally, the City conducted several community engagement activities in order to understand the needs and priorities the of Community and implement a plan accordingly. One of the priorities identified by the community is the need for placemaking and engaging in more social cohesive activities to regain the sense of community that has been lost over the years. Cornish Park Specifically, has been identified as a priority for redevelopment.
2. Project Description
The City of Cambridge is soliciting designs for a mural for the surface of two basketball courts in Cornish Park. The mural should be a reflection of the community, current and historical.
Artists may submit more than one design. The selected design will be transferred to the courts surface by Play in Color, artists are not responsible for the transfer of the submitted design to this large format.
The selection process of the artwork for the mural will led by Shelton Hawkins who has expertise on converting artwork to murals for basketball courts, along with local partners, City staff and residents.
3. Project Schedule
Design proposals accepted until August 15, 2022. Selected proposals will be announced no later than Friday, August 26, 2022.
4. Budget
The selected artist will each be awarded $1000.
5. Submission Guidelines & Requirements
- Maryland residents with a connection to Cambridge, MD and particularly to the Pine Street are encouraged to apply.
- Design proposals must be emailed to Yvette Robinson. Paper applications will not be accepted.
- Designs must measure no more than 8.5 inches by 14 inches.
- Designs must be in PDF form. No designs should be submitted that require specialized software to open.
- The artists selected for the implementation grant may be requested to work with Play in Color and the Cornish Park to further develop the design.
6. Evaluation Factors
The above-mentioned committee will determine the winning designs.
Proposals will be rated on the following qualifications:
- Aesthetic appeal
- Content meaningful to those who will use the basketball courts (Pine Street residents and area residents).
- Practicality and functionality of design implementation.
7. Awards
The City of Cambridge reserves the right to award this RFP to the artist who provides the design that best matches the evaluation criteria as determined solely by selection committee members in their absolute discretion.
