Melvin Jews, the administrative judge of the District Court of Maryland for District 2, which covers Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties, was the first Black District Court Judge in Dorchester County when he was appointed by Gov. O’Malley in 2014. He took over as administrative judge in September 2024. Judge Jews is a dynamic speaker throughout the MidAtlantic region.
Judge Jews grew up in Cambridge, graduating from Cambridge-South Dorchester High School in 1978. He attended University of Maryland College Park, then graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1986. He worked as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Bureau and then in private practice throughout Maryland until he was appointed to the bench in Dorchester County.
Judge Jews is licensed to practice law before all Maryland Courts, the United States District Court for Maryland, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
