[ARCHIVED] Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy Awards Cambridge Police Department

5 December 2025
For Immediate Release

Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy Awards Cambridge Police Department $99,700

Cambridge, MD -- The City of Cambridge is pleased to announce an award in the amount of $99,735 from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy. The grant was made through the Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.

The Cambridge Police Department will use the grant to fund their Safety through Technology, Education and Partnerships (S.T.E.P.) program. The program aims to reduce violent crime by combining advanced technology, including surveillance and automated license plate readers (ALPR) systems, with data-driven policing and place-based interventions. S.T.E.P. focuses on at-risk youth, violent crime hotspots, and community safety. Funding for the program supports personnel, equipment, training, and operational resources.

The Byrne-Justice Assistance grant will be used to purchase, install and maintain ALPRs and surveillance cameras in violent crime hotspots in Cambridge; train officers on lawful, ethical technology use; conduct directed overtime patrols in high crime neighborhoods; and deliver structured youth mentorship and recreational programming in partnership with New Beginnings Youth and Family Services that will include leadership development, and emphasize conflict resolution and decision-making.

“The CPD is grateful for this generous grant from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy, which demonstrates its ongoing support of CPD’s work to reduce crime and build community trust,” said Chief of Police Justin Todd.
